Stoker
1st Class P/KX 103727, Royal Navy. HMS Dunedin. Died 24/11/1941.
Age 23. Connection to Blaxhall unknown. Commemorated on the Portsmouth
Naval Memorial. HMS Dunedin was a light cruiser. In November 1941,
she was operating in the Atlantic trying to find and destroy an
armed merchant raider (Atlantis) and a U-Boat supply ship (Python).
HMS Devonshire found Atlantis in the South Atlantic and sank her.
survivors were found in their lifeboats by U-126, which commenced
towing them towards South America. Python came to assist, which
changed the rendezvous for another U-boat, U-124. While heading
for that rendezvous, U-124 sighted HMS Dunedin and fired three torpedoes.
two of which hit, causing HMS Dunedin to sink rapidly. An estimated
250 of the total complement of 500 survived the attack, but when
they were rescued three days later, only 72 remained alive. of which
a further 5 died within days. Stoker Ling was a Bernado’s boy from
