The Saxmundham war memorial is in the form of two white, marble, plaques containing 40 names of those who died in World War 1 and 13 in World War 2. The original memorial was unveiled 13th May 1923 by Major-General Sir Ronald Lane. Further faculty was granted on 20th October 1947 for the Second World War section. Details appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times 15th May 1923.

ATKINSON

Michael Firth
Lieutenant, Royal Navy. HMS Somali. Died 24/09/1942. Age 30. Son of George Leslie and Margaret Atkinson. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

On 20th September 1942, while escorting convoy PQ-18 near Iceland, HMS Somali was hit by a torpedo fired by U-703. Extensive damage was caused and most of her crew were taken off, although 80 remained. HMS Ashanti took HMS Somali in tow. By the evening of the 23/24 September, HMS Ashanti had, considering the damage to HMS Somali, achieved a remarkable towing distance of 420 miles, but in the middle of a snow storm, the tow-rope broke, HMS Somali split into two and sank almost immediately, with the loss of the remaining crew on board

By 1944, the aircrew of 9 Squadron specialised in the dropping of large bombs on specific target (including the 12,000lb Tallboy bomb) using Lancaster bombers. Sgt Bedwell is also commemorated on the Leiston War Memorial
