Corporal 244353, 63rd Royal Naval Division Signal Company, Royal
Engineers. Committed suicide by cutting his throat whilst of unsound
mind when at home on leave from France 17 January 1917. Born 16
June 1885 in Tonbridge, Kent. His mother was Mrs. Agnes Esther Annison,
c/o Messrs Neve and Thompson Solicitors, Tonbridge also 130, High
Street, Tonbridge, Kent (where he committed suicide) and later Fairlight,
Woodfield Road, Tonbridge; his father Mr. R. E. Annision died at
130, High Street, Tonbridge 7 January 1917 but Arthur could not
get there until 11 January, after his father's funeral, which caused
him great distress. Attested 22 September 1914 in London, aged 29
years, an Electrical Engineer by trade, height 5 feet 4½
inches, chest 40 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes, brown hair,
religious denomination Church of England. Transferred to Royal Engineers
from Royal Marines 21 December 1916. In the 1911 census he was aged
26, born Tonbridge, Kent, a Patent Agent, son of Richard and Agnes
Annison, resident 130, High Street, Tonbridge Kent. Buried in Tonbridge

"Killed
in Action"
This non-commissioned officer and his company were "standing
to" about 500 yards behind the front line, awaiting a pending
enemy attack. During the attack, Lance Corporal Bird was badly gassed,
but one half hour later, on the word, he rallied his section to
the advance, in short rushes, to the front line. He was rising to
lead the fourth rush when he was shot through the head, death being
almost instantaneous. |

16th, 1917, Narragansett, on a voyage from New York to London with
a cargo of lubricating oil, was torpedoed and sunk by the German
submarine U-44 (Paul Wagenführ), southwest of Ireland. 46 persons
