The Book of Remembrance was unveiled and dedicated by the Bishop of Oxford 12 November 1949. The book is mounted inside a glass fronted case. It was created by Mr Keir Hett. There are 145 names listed.

ANNISON Arthur Liddiard

[According to Ardingly College he was in the Royal Navy and died in 1917.] Corporal 244353, 63rd Royal Naval Division Signal Company, Royal Engineers. Committed suicide by cutting his throat whilst of unsound mind when at home on leave from France 17 January 1917. Born 16 June 1885 in Tonbridge, Kent. His mother was Mrs. Agnes Esther Annison, c/o Messrs Neve and Thompson Solicitors, Tonbridge also 130, High Street, Tonbridge, Kent (where he committed suicide) and later Fairlight, Woodfield Road, Tonbridge; his father Mr. R. E. Annision died at 130, High Street, Tonbridge 7 January 1917 but Arthur could not get there until 11 January, after his father's funeral, which caused him great distress. Attested 22 September 1914 in London, aged 29 years, an Electrical Engineer by trade, height 5 feet 4½ inches, chest 40 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes, brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. Transferred to Royal Engineers from Royal Marines 21 December 1916. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Tonbridge, Kent, a Patent Agent, son of Richard and Agnes Annison, resident 130, High Street, Tonbridge Kent. Buried in Tonbridge Cemetery, Kent. Plot/Row/Section/Area A. Grave 529.

ANSELL Cecil Ralph

Corporal, 40537, 23rd Trench Mortar By. Royal Garrison Artillery, died 24 October 1916, aged 20 and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension. Plot I. Row E. Grave 23. He was the son of W. R. T. and C. L. Ansell, of Chichester, Sussex.

ANSELL William Albert Charles

Private 16151 Died 12 August 1915, age 20 in the 6th Bn of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery. Plot IX. Row D. Grave 20. He was the son of Mr W. R. T. And Mrs C. L. Ansell, of 76, Spitalfield Lane, Chichester, Sussex.

AUSTIN E C

He is not on the CWGC site but according to Ardingly College he was a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps and died in 1916.

AVERY Harold

Private G/7724 in the 7th Bn Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), died 8 July 1917, age 23 and is buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension. Plot II. Row C. Grave 18. He was the son of Horace Avery of Kemsing, Sevenoaks.

AYRES Alfred Charles Edward

Private 147018 in the 10th Bn Canadian Infantry, died 9 April 1917, age 23 and is buried in Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelusi. Section D. Grave 27. He was the son of the late Dr Aston Ayres, of Preston Park, Brighton.

BAKER Charles

Second Lieutenant, 27th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Killed in action 22 October 1917. Aged 29. Son of James and Harriett Jane Baker, of Yapton, Arundel. Buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot VI. Row A. Grave 31.

BARNES Arthur Randall

Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Bn Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry) killed in action 4 October 1917, age 18 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 41 to 42. Son of Eliza Edith Barnes, late of 2, New Road Avenue, Chatham, Kent and the late Harry Randall Barnes, formerly 352, High Street, Rochester. Commissioned 25 April 1917, embarked for France 18 June 1917, joined battalion 11 July 1917, originally posted to "H" Company,

BAYNE Vincent Percy

Sergeant 300488 in “D” Coy. 2nd/5th Bn of the London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade, died 6 November 1917, age 19 and is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Plot XIII.Row B. Grave 13. Only son of Herbert Taylor Bayne and Fanny Jane Bayne of 103, Church Hill. Walthamstow, London.

BEALE J A

The J A Beale listed fits none of the details in the Ardingly College Book of Remembrance. However, there is a Beale, John Sergeant, G8262 who was in ”B” Coy. 11th Bn. the Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment, died 7 October 1915, age 32 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 11 C. Son of John and Betsy Beale of 148, Leander Road, Brixton Hill: husband of Edith Mary Beale of 10, Beechdale Road, Brixton Hill, London.

BEER Robert Alexander

Second Lieutenant of the 12th Bn. Gloucestershire Regiment, killed in action on 4 October 1917, age 26 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 72 to 75. Son of the late Samuel Frank and Marion (nee Easton) Beer. In the 1891 census he was aged 1, born London, Middlesex, son of Harry and Ellen beer, resident Balls Pond Road, Islington, London & Middlesex. In the 1901 census he was aged 9, born London, Middlesex, grandson of Alexander and Mercy A Easton, son of FRank and Marion Beer, resident 10, Albany Road, Hornsey, Edmonton, Middlesex. In the 1911 census he was aged 19, a Clerk, born Islington, London, living with his aunt and uncle at Swallow Cliff, 4, Redland Green Road, Redland, Bristol, Gloucestershire.

BELCHEM Howard Matthew

Second Lieutenant, 1st/5th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. Died of wounds 19 March 1915. Aged 36. Birth registered in the October to December Quarter 1878 in Guildford Registration District, Surrey. Son of Capt. and Mrs. Belchem, of Guildford, Surrey; husband of the late Margaret Comer Belchem, of "Kylemore," Harrow Rd., West Worthing, Sussex. Served in the Sudan and South African Campaign. Buried in Ramparts Cemetery, Lille Gate, belgium. Row E. Grave 3.

BENFIELD Brian William

Private 510 of the14th Bn. Royal Warwickshire Regiment died on 23 July 1916, age 26 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 9A, 9B and 10B. Son of William Joseph and Elizabeth Maud, of Hawthorne Cottage, Bells Hill, High Barnet, Herts. An engineer of the General Electric Coy., Birmingham.

Private 10785 of the 8th Bn Royal Fusiliers died on 7 October 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 8 C, 9 A and 16 A .

BENTLEY Howard Lidyard

Second Lieutenant of the 2nd Bn., Royal Fusiliers (City Of London Regiment) killed in action 28 February 1917. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 8 C, 9 A and 16 A. Baptised 2 July 1893 in St Michael's, Stone, Staffordshire, son of Francis John and Catharine Alice Bentley. In the 1901 census he was aged 7, born Stone, Staffordshire, boarding with Wiliam and Annie Smallwood, at 42, Victoria Street, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Stone, Staffordshire, unmarried, an Assistant, resident 248 - 250 Regent Street, St. James, Westminster, London & Middlesex.

BIRD Richard de Burgho Molyneux

Lance corporal 432 of the 8th Bn. Canadian Infantry killed in action on 25 April 1915, age 30 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 24-26-28-30. Son of Maud Katherine Bird, of 9, Morab Terrace, Penzance and the late Henry Bird. Born 21 February 1885 at Millbrook, Cornwall. Law Student by trade. Unmarried. Attested 21 September 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada, aged 30 years 4 months, height 5 feet 8¼ inches, chest 34½ inches, medium complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. Extract from Canadian Death Records:

"Killed in Action"

This non-commissioned officer and his company were "standing to" about 500 yards behind the front line, awaiting a pending enemy attack. During the attack, Lance Corporal Bird was badly gassed, but one half hour later, on the word, he rallied his section to the advance, in short rushes, to the front line. He was rising to lead the fourth rush when he was shot through the head, death being almost instantaneous.

Buried in Minster (Thanet) Cemetery 94. Born 9 October 1899. Joined Royal Flying Corps 10 October 1917, transferred to Royal Air Force 1 April 1918. Civilian occupation Clerk. Son of JOhn Afred Henry and Mrs. Bishop, of Casa Mira, Woodland Avenue, Hornchurch, Essex. In the 1901 census he was aged 1, born Ilford, Essex, son of John Alfred Henry and Marion Bishop, resident 12, Mayfair Avenue, Ilford, Romford, Essex. Height 5 feet 4 inches, chest 32½ inches,

BLAKE Paul George James

Rifleman 2694 of the 5th Bn. London Regiment (The London Rifle Brigade) died 1 July 1916, age 23 and is buried in Gommecourt British Cemetery No 2, Hebuterneiv E.5. Son of Rosa Blake, of St. Sebastiano 30, Palermo, Italy and the late George Blake. Born at Naples.

BONCKER Barry [Robert]

Second Lieutenant in the 1st Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 1 July 1916, age 19 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 2 C. Son of Frederic and Violet Boncker of 35 Whitworth Road, South Norwood, London.

BRADFORD Frederick Reith Campbell

Second Lieutenant of the 1st/4th (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers) London Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916, age 19 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 9 D and 16 B. Son of Archibald Campbell Bradford and Clara Sophie Bradford of “Alverstoke,” 68, Derby Road, Woodford, Essex. In the 1901 census he was aged 4, born Woodford, Essex, son of Archibald C and Clara S Bradford, resident Woodlands Villas, 3, South Woodford, Woodford, Woodford St Mary, West Ham, London & Essex. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Woodford, Essex, a Student, boarding/schooled in Ardingly, Haywards Heath, Sussex.

BROOKE Frederic John Medows Zachary

[The CWGC do not have a 'Z' in the name but it is listed in the N.Z.E.F. Roll of Honour] Trooper 43296 of the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps died of disease in Palestine 18 December 1917 age 25 and is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery C 129. Son of Frederic and Emma Brooke (nee Theobald). Born at Notting Hill, London.

BURCH Robert Alban

Private 42613 of the 1st/6th Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment died 14 October 1918, age 20 and is buried at Tourgeville Military Cemetery IV. D. 8. Son of Robert Mackay Burch and Annie Burch, of 5, Cobham Road, Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey. Native of St Albans, Herts. In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born St Albans, Herfordshire, son of Robert M and Annie Burch, resident Clyde Villa, Etna Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire.

BUTT William George

Lance Corporal 2022 of the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) killed in action at Gallpoli 22 August 1915, age 23 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. Panel 21. Son of Fred and Mary Ellen Butt. Born Hanover Square, London, resident Anerley, London S.E., enlisted London.

CAMPBELL Colin Keith Dufferin

Second Lieutenant of the 58th Bn. Australian Infantry A.I.F. died of wounds on 30 September 1918 age 21 and is buried in the Tincourt New British Cemetery. Plot V. Row F. Grave 46. Son of John Walter and Lavenia Maud Cater, of Bridge Street, St. Ives, Hunts. Born at Ashford, Middlesex. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.).

CAUDWELL A C

Could not locate on the CWGC site; have tried various spellings and the Queen’s Westminster Rifles but had no success, although there is a list of the Regiment’s casualties in the nave of Westminster Abbey but it is not online.

CAYME Bernard Glyde

Private 81142 of the 10th Bn. Canadian Infantry, died 22 May 1915, age 24 and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial. Son of Harry and Minnie Annie Cayme, of High Park Lodge, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Enlisted 1914.

CHEESE Ernest Velmont

[The remembrance Book lists him as E K CHEESE of the Army Pay Corps.] Lieutenant of the Army Pay Department who died 30 July 1916 and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen Officers. Plot A. Row 7. Grave 1.

CLARK Arthur James Richard

Lieutenant of the 8th Bn. Royal Fusiliers, died 9 October 1916, age 20 and is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe. Plot III. Row A. Grave 27. Son of the Rev. Arthur James Clark, of The Rectory, Gussage St. Michael, Salisbury, now of Dorset Lodge, West Moors, Dorset.

Private 28076 of the 2 Bn. Bedfordshire Regiment, died 12 December 1917, age 25 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Plot XXVII. Row DD. Grave 7. Son of Edward and Minnie L Cooper, of 20 Queen’s Road, Hertford, Herts.

CROCKETT Lawrence Charles

Captain of the Special List, attached to the Royal Army Medical Corps, died 17 October 1918, age 37 and is buried in Abington (SS Peter and Paul) Churchyard, South-East of the Church. Son of Sir James Henry Clifden Crockett and Lady Crockett, of Dallington Lodge, Northamptonshire: husband of Olive Crocket.

Sergeant 3628 of the 113th Bty. Royal Field Artillery, died 15 September 1914, age 34 and is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial. Husband of Mary Ann Crouch, of Middle Woodford, Salisbury.

DENYER, MC Augustus Andrew

Second Lieutenant in the 9th Bn. York and Lancaster Regiment, died 7 June 1917, age 38 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 14 A and 14 B. Son of Andrew Denyer, of 83, St. Ronan’s Road, Southsea and the late Florence Denyer, of 34, Steyne Gardens, Worthing. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.).

Row 2. Grave 18. Son of Edward Temple Hall Edwards and Isabella Johnson Edwards of Villa Louise, Avenue Labrouche, St Jean-de-Luz, Basses, Pyrenees, France. In the 1901 census he was aged 15, born in France a British Subject, boarding at Ardingly College, Sussex.

Lieutenant of the 1st Bn. Royal Warwickshire Regiment, attd 1st/4th Bn. Northamptonshire Regiment. died 2 November 1917, age 24 and is buried in Gaza War Cemetery. Plot XV. Row C. Grave 10. Second Lieutenant of the Royal Flying Corps, Stonehenge and General List, died 19 February 1918, age 19 and cremated and commemorated in City of London Cemetery and Crematorium, Manor Park, Ref. 180. 90038. Son of the late Walter Hill Farbrother and of Clara C Farbrother, of 38, Temple Sheen Road, East Sheen, London. Educated at St Saviours School and Ardingly, Haywards Heath, Sussex.

FARRALL James Garney Marshall

Second Lieutenant (Observer), R.A.F. Seaplane Station, 406 Flight, Royal Air Force, lost at sea while on patrol off Westgate, United Kingdom, presumed killed flying in a Short Admiralty Type 184 Seaplane serial number N2937 18 July 1918 and is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton. Private 1201 of the 1st Bn. Honourable Artillery Company (Infantry), killed in action at Hooge 16 June 1915 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 9. In the 1891 census he was aged 7, born Sussex, a scholar, son of Thomas B and Mary French, resident North Street, Portslade, Steyning, Sussex. In the 1901 census he was aged 17, born Sussex, a Seaman Apprentice, son of Thomas B and Mary French, resident 21, North Street, Portslade by Sea, Steyning, Sussex. In the 1911 census he was aged 27, born Portslade, Sussex, a Ship's Officer, unmarried, resident with his sister, Laura Daisy French, at 24, Wellington Road, Peckham S. E., Camberwell, London & Surrey.

Private PS/1506 of the 23rd Bn. Royal Fusiliers, died 3 May 1917, age 19 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 3. Son of Henry and Clara Fuller, of 8, College Street, Brighton.

GRESTOCK Howard
Lieutenant of the Force Army Unit, Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) Division 73rd Bn. died of wounds whilst a prisoner of war in Bavarian Field Hospital, Henin Lietard, 5 February 1917, age 39 and is buried in the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez. South Lancashire Regiment and the late Harriet Maud Jacob. The Book of Remembrance agrees in every detail except it lists Jacob as in the Royal Field Artillery.

Private 14098 of the 5th Bn. Dorsetshire Regiment, died 21 February 1918, age 20 and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial Panel 76. Son of Herbert W and Edith James, of 100 Mildred Avenue, Watford. . The Book of Remembrance agrees in every detail except it lists James as a Lance Corporal in the Dorset Regiment. This was the only casualty in that regiment.

Husband of Ellen Kempster, of 311 Wharncliffe Gardens, St John’s Wood Road, London. He was born in Knightsbridge, London 23 September 18, , entered service with the’ Good Hope’ October 1914 and was killed in action 1 November 1914 in the Battle of Coronel, off the coast of Chile.

LETTS John Robert

Second Mate of the SS ‘Narragansett’ (Greenock) Mercantile Marine died 16 March 1917, age 37 and is commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial. Son of John and Martha Letts, of High Street, New Romney. Born in London. Narragansett, built by Scott & Co., Greenock in 1903 and owned at the time of her loss by Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd., Greenock, was a British tanker of 9196 tons. On March 16th, 1917, Narragansett, on a voyage from New York to London with a cargo of lubricating oil, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-44 (Paul Wagenführ), southwest of Ireland. 46 persons were lost. Read more at wrecksite. The Book of Remembrance refers to the service as the Merchant Navy.

Son of Charles Joseph Ryland Magrath and Anne Elizabeth Magrath, of ‘St. Kilda’, Pevensey Bay, Sussex. Born in Cork. He was formerly in the Warwickshire Yeomanry with whom he served in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine.

PALMER Percy Victor
Able seaman 296273 (RFR/CH/B/9038) of HMS ‘Cressy’ Royal Navy, died 22 September, age 31 and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial 2.  Son pf William and Harriet Palmer.  Awarded the Messina Medal.  Cressy, capt R.W. Johnson was torpedoed by U-9. The U-9 was responsible for the killing of 1459 men in one single day, sending Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue to the bottom.   The Messina Medal was awarded to members of the Royal Navy who assisted in the 1908 Messina Sicily Earthquake
