Ebernoe is a remote location between Kirdford and Northchapel, a thinly populated part of West Sussex, which includes the Hamlet of Balls Cross. The quaint old church of Holy Trinity has a small wooden cross in the Churchyard bearing the names of 10 local men who fell in 1914-1918.

Private 1358, 22nd Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers. 2nd Division Killed in action 31st July 1916. Aged 21. Son of Mrs Anne Andell of Balls Cross. Born in Pulborough and enlisted in Horsham. Buried Quarry Cemetery, Montauban F.399


Walter John Frank

Private DM/2/164619, Mechanical Transport, Royal Army Service Corps attached to 1/1st Lancashire Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died in France 25th April 1918. Aged 21. Son of Elizabeth Bridger of Frithfold Farm, Ebernoe. Born in Kirdford and enlisted in Horsham. Buried Etaples Military Cemetery F. 40



Private 5183, 2/4th Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment. 61st Division. Killed in action 19th July 1916. Aged 26 Son of George and Anne Chitty of High Buildings, Balls Cross. Born in Harting and enlisted in Bristol.Buried Rue de Bois Military Cemetery.F.348


James Henry

Private SD/5342, 14th (.Reserve Battalion,) The Royal Sussex Regiment. Died at home 13th April 1916. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Durrant of Balls Cross. Born in Rudford and enlisted in Petworth Included on Pulborough War Memorial. Buried Northampton Cemetery, Towcester Road.


Alfred Ernest

Corporal SD/3338 1/4th Battalion, The Royal Sussex. 34th Division. Killed in action 2nd September 1918.Son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Durrant of Balls Cross. Born in Balls Cross near Horsham and enlisted in Worthing. Resident of Worthing. Awarded the military Medal (M.M.). Included on Worthing War Memorial. Buried Messines Ridge British Cemetery Belgium B. 168


Herbert Victor

[Listed as Hubert Vidler LUSTED on CWGC] Lance Corporal 23672, 3rd Battalion, The Grenadier Guards. Guards Division. Killed in action at Flers-Courcelette 14th September 1916. Born in Ebernoe and enlisted in London. Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial MR. 21

Private 624501 The Labour Corps. Died at home 28th October 1918. Aged 18. Son of Abrham and Blanche Pullen of Stokers, Ebernoe. Born in Petworth and enlisted in Brighton. Buried Holy Trinity Churchyard, Ebernoe.



Stoker 1st Class 223291, H.M.S. "President V", Royal Navy. Died in Germany 22nd November 1918. Buried Berlin South Western Cemetery, Stahnsdorff


William Edward

Rifleman 11108, 1st Battalion, The Kings Royal Rifle Corps. 2nd Division. Killed in action 26th October 1914. Aged 19. Son of Edward and Rhoda Rapson of 48, Totland Road, Brighton. Born in Northchapel and enlisted in Petworth. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Belgium. MR.29
