The memorial is in the form of a wayside shrine by the roadside at the entrance to the historic church of St. George. There is, within the Church, a fine brass to Thomas de Camoys, one of Henry V’s Knights who fought at Agincourt. Well worth a visit. 7 Surnames and Christian Name(s).

Frederick Arthur

Private G/1139, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Killed in action at the Battle of Loos 25 September 1915. Aged 30. Son of George and Charlotte Boniface of Terwick Mill Lane, Rogate. Born Pound Common and enlisted in Chichester. Commemorated on The Loos Memorial MR.19.

GALE

Herbert Arthur

Stoker Petty Officer 312109/PO, H.M.S. “Hampshire”, Royal Navy. Lost when the Cruiser was mined off the Orkney Islands on 5 June 1916. No survivors. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial Mr.3.

Private G/3372, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division. Killed in action at the Battle of Loos 25 September 1915. Aged 22. Son of William and Elizabeth Putnam of Fern Bank, Trotton. Born in Terwick and enlisted in Midhurst. Commemorated on The Loos Memorial MR.19.

Captain, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. 5th Division. Killed in action near Ypres 30 September 1915. Buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Enclosure Number 4, Belgium.

Private M2/139047, No 1 Water Tank Company, Royal Army Service Corps. Died in France 25 October 1918. Born in Midhurst and enlisted in Horsham. Buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy F.725
