TROWBRIDGE SOUTH AFRICAN (BOER) WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is sited in the entrance lobby of the Town Hall, Fore Street, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and was cast by Singers of Frome, and made in bronze with a black lacquer inlay, framed in oak, measuring height 122 centimetres, width 84 centimetres. It lists the men who served and returned (41 names) and those who died (10 names), a total of 51 names in two sections. The £80 cost was paid for by public subscription and was unveiled by Lieutenant-General Lord Methuen, on 21 November 1903. The memorial was restored with a grant from the War Memorials Trust, and was unveiled at the Town Hall 12 September 2016. Details of the unveiling appeared in the Wiltshire Times.

Note: On 22 December a shell from the Boer Creusot gun nick-named 'Long Tom' killed 9, mortally wounded 2 and wounded 6 men from the Gloucester Regiment. Also listed on Marlborough College Old Boys Tablets.
