The
memorial was erected to celebrate the Millenium Celebrations. It stands
at the roadside adjacent to a roundabout within Ackworth. It akes the
form of a square plinth of stone blocks, ten courses high, with a pyramidal
cap and surmounted by a small Celtic style wheel cross on a two stepped
base. There are 83 names for World War 1 and 40 for World War 2. It
was unveiled on 5th September 1999 by Dowager Ldy St Oswald.

23. Born 26 December 1892 in Bentham, Yorkshire, resident Pontefract,
enlisted Knottingley. Baptised 29 January 1893 in bentham, Yorkshire,
son of Jane Briscoe. Son of Edward Walton Briscoe and Jane Briscoe,
of 6, Graham Street, Lancaster. He won a County Council scholarship
and took a school teacher’s post at Ackworth School, under
Mr. J. Swinbank. In the 1901 census he was aged 8, born Bentham,
Yorkshire, grandson of Joseph and Mary Shepherd, son of Janes
Briscoe (a widow), resident Main Street, Bentham, Settle, Yorkshire
& Yorkshire (West Riding). In the 1911 census he was aged
18, born Bentham, Yorkshire, a Student teacher, son of Jane Briscoe
(a widow), resident Station Road, Bentham, Yorkshire & Yorkshire
(West Riding). No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial,
Somme, Frannce. Pier and Face 8 C 9 A and 16 A.

Another
Bentham boy missing and reported killed is Corporal Edward Walton
Briscoe, the grandson of ‘Old Taylor Shepherd’ of
the Collingwood Houses, who is in his 91st year. Corp. Briscoe
was the son of the late Mr. Edward W. Briscoe. He won a County
Council scholarship and took a school teacher’s post at
Ackworth School, under Mr. J. Swinbank, and prior to enlisting
in the Duke of Wellington’s appeared to have a promising
career before him. Much sympathy is felt with his widowed mother.
