SCAMBLESBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial can be found on the north wall of the chancel in St Martin's Church in Church Lane, Scamblesby. It takes the form of a rectangular, wall mounted, plaque on an oak backboard; the inscriptions are in raised lettering, with 11 names of those who died in World War 1 listed in three columns. There is also a glazed framed Roll of Honour document with the names of 9 men killed in WW1 and 13 who served and returned. Compared to the above list of names, Bertram Blades is added, while John William Fogg, William Lamming and John Henry Hitch are missing. In the churchyard is a single Worl;d War 2 war grave. The tables below containing details of the men have been sorted into alphabetical order within each section for ease of reading and research.

Born 1892, bpt 9.10.12 Horncastle, Lincs, son of James & Annie (née Harrison Hales) Blades. Attested to Territorial Force, Lincs Regt May 1911 Louth, occupation labourer, became regular soldier Aug 1914, transferred to final regiment Sep 1916. FOGG John William
Private 9308, 2nd Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 2 April 1915, age 24. Born 1890 Tealby, Lincs, son of Joseph and Betsy (née Willows) Fogg, of Stainton-le-Vale, Tealby, Lincs. Enlisted 1911 Alford, Lincs, pre-war occupation farm labourer. Buried in Grave II. J. 17, Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France. Also commemorated on Stainton-le-Vale War Memorial, Lincs.
HARRISON Fred
Private 201430, 2nd Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 31 July 1917. Born 1889 Martin-by-Horncastle, Lincs, son of Charles & Hannah (née Thompson) Harrison of Scamblesby. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Commemorated at Panel 21, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. See also Roll of Honour (below)
HITCH John Henry
Private 50758, 1st Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 44984, Yorks and Lancs Regt. Died of wounds 21 August 1918, age 30. Born 1888 Bingley, Keighley, Yorks, son of the late William and Annie (née Plumb) Hitch; husband of Violet Mary Surr) Hitch of Scamblesby, the sister of John William Surr (see below). Pre-war occupation iron moulder. Buried in Grave V.D.84, Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
IREMONGER Charles
Private 52161, 6th Bn. Leicestershire Regiment, formerly 51138, Lincolnshire Regt. Died of wounds 1 November 1918, age 20. Born 9.10.1898, son of Charles William and Mary Jane (née Thorndyke) Iremonger of Scamblesby. Buried in Grave VI.F.21, Terincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
LADLEY George C
Private 20110, 1st Bn. Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), previously 33940 3rd Reserve Cavalry Regt. and 59274 5th Bn Royal Fusiliers. Died in Aire Stationary Hospital 6 June 1918 of wounds received 18.4.18, age 22. Born 1896, bpt 26 May 1896 Scamblesby, son of George and the late Eleanor (née Locking) Ladley. SORFLEET William aka Willie
Serjeant 17/1499, 17th Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). Killed in action 24 July 1916, age 28. Born 1888, bpt 16 Dec 1888, Horncastle, Lincs, son of the late Richard Cornelius Espin & Eliza Ann (née Sorfleet) Espin, of Horncastle. Husband of Florrie English (formerly Sorfleet, née Sands), of Great Sturton, Horncastle, Lincs, father of Irene, George William & Florence Sorfleet. Previous service in 4th Bn Lincs Regt and Leeds City Police. Commemorated at Pier and Face 2 A 2 C and 2 D, Thiepval Memorial, France. See also Roll of Honour (below)
SURR Charles William
Cpl 224204, 51 Coy Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of bronchitis 5 Jun 1919, Bournemouth, age 29. He had been severely wounded in knee in France, 1916, but continued to serve in UK until discharged 15.5.19 due to disability. Born 1889, bpt 8.9.1889 Shadwell, Yorks. Son of John William and Annie (née Parrish) Surr of Scamblesby. Enlisted 2.9.14, formerly a grocer. Awarded DCM for conspicuous gallantry, France, 1916. Buried in Scamblesby churchyard.

SMITH George Edward
Sergeant 1151664, 49 Sqdn, RAFVR. Killed 25 Nov 1941 when Hampden aircraft AD759 in which he was wireless operator/air gunner hit the ground nearby while on a training flight from RAF Scampton, age 27. Born 1914, Hareby, nr Spilsby, Lincs, son of the late George Smith & Sarah Elizabeth (née Gilbert) Smith of Scamblesby. Pre-war occupation tyre company manager. Husband of Gertrude E (née Hickinson) Smith, father of Michael E Smith. Buried in Scamblesby churchyard.
