World War 1 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Transcribed & Researched Martin Edwards - 2006

The Wealdstone memorial stands on the corner of the High Street and Spencer Road and is in the form of a clocktower with panels on the three sides of the tower naming those who died in World War 1. There are 249 names listed by initial, rank and any decoration of these five names have been added after the original list. The memorial was unveiled by Field Marshal the Lord W E ironside on 11th November 1923 and dedicated by the Archdeacon of Hampstead on 12th November 1923. The architect was Mr Harold F Walker and the builder Mr J C Rackham. On 23rd August 1940 the clock on the memorial was damaged by enemy action adn the clock stop at that time; the clock stayed this was for a further 5 years. In 1970 the clock was dismantled to allow regilding of the hands and new glass to be installed. The clock tower became a Grade 2 listed building in September 2001. For ease of reading the names have been sorted into alphabetical order and do not appear in the same order as the memorial.
