TRAGIC
DEATH OF
YOUNG OFFICER
Capt. H. M. R. Norton
Killed in
Rhine Crossing
IN the tragic death of Capt. Harold Martin Rex Norton, of the
Glider Pilot Regiment—who escaped the hell of Arnhem only
to give his life in the Crossing of the Rhine three weeks ago—we
have lost a young officer of the finest type, whose character,
personality and gift of leadership were qualities sorely needed
in this country today.
Captain Norton who was 23 years of age when he died on March
24th, was the younger son of Coun and Mrs. H. H. Norton, of
“Holmesdale,” Elm High-road, and he was engaged
to Miss Margaret Sandall, only daughter of Ald. and Mrs. J.
Sandall, of The Beeches, Clarkson-avenue. The deepest sympathy
of everyone who knew and liked Capt. Norton will go out to his
family and fiancée in their great grief.
A young man of upright character, always pleasant and frank,
Captain Rex Norton was universally popular, and his quiet, unassuming
manner was typical of his whole life.
AN OLD GRAMMARIAN
At the Wisbech Grammar School, where he was educated, Capt.
Nor¬ton was regarded with great pride and affection. A fine
sportsman, he excelled at cricket and football, win¬ning
his School colours at both, and was also a keen tennis player.
While at school he was a member of the Cadets, and the present
members of the Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps will
vividly recall Captain Norton's account of his experiences at
Arnhem—one of the finest talks that the Cadets have I
ever been privileged to hear.
Captain Norton later joined the Home Guard, being attached to
the Elm Contingent. He was for a short time in his father's
office (Messrs. Thos. Peatling & Sons, Ltd.) before joining
up in 1940, and he was to have rejoined the firm alter the war.
On D Day Captain Norton went to France, returning about a week
later for further operations, and since then he had taken part
in many perilous glider attacks. When our men made their epic
stand at Arnhem last September, Captain Norton was with the
second wave of troops that made the landings in Holland, and
he and his men held their ground stubbornly until ordered to
withdraw.

WISBECH
SOLDIER
KILLED IN ITALY.
Tragic News of
Pte Leslie Wabe.
Mrs. L. Wabe, of Eastview, opposite Inglethorpe, Elm High-road,
Wisbech, received official notification on Friday of the death
in action of her husband, Pte. Leslie (“Lal”) Wabe,
of the Cheshire Regiment.
He is the second son of Mr. W. Wabe, of Norwich-road, Wisbech,
and married Miss M. Bartrum, of Shouldham.
By a tragic coincidence Pte. Wabe was killed within a day of
the death—reported in last week's “Standard”—of
Pte. Percy White, of Elm. The two were very great friends. They
joined the Army together about a year ago, and were both drafted
overseas together in June: many miles separated them at the
end, however, for Pte. Wabe was killed in Italy, and Pte. White
died in India.
Aged 36, Pte. Wabe was educated at the Ramnoth-road School,
and afterwards worked for his father, a well-known building
contracter, of Norwich-road, Wisbech. He later worked for Mr.
K. Lankfer, builder, until the outbreak of war, when he went
into the employ of the Government.
A good all-round sportsman, Pte. Wabe excelled at football and
was a popular member of the Wisbech Town Football Club, for
whom he played on numerous occasions. At one time he also played
for a works team in Bedford. He was an ardent member of the
Wisbech British Legion Club.
Pte.
