Educated Dover College; gazetted 2nd Lieut to the 1st East Yorkshires from the Militia 27-5-1908, promoted Lieutenant 3-9-1910. He was appointed Temporary Captain 15-11-1914 and this rank was made substantive 6-5-1915.

He went to France with the 6th Division in Sept 1914, and was mortally wounded by a snipers bullet in the trenches near Armentieres 7-5-1915 and died two hours later being buried in Le Bizet Convent. Unm. Major I.L.I. Clark, commanding the 1st East Yorkshires, wrote: " I looked upon Markham as my most reliable Company Commander, always cheery and a splendid example to all under him. He was beloved by his men, and exceedingly popular with his brother officers."; and Private John Brady of his company" He was the gentleman who led my platoon to the trenches on the Aisne, the platton that was the first to come under the fire of the Germans famous Coalboxes. He laughed at those shells, bucked us up, making us so that we could not do anything else but follow him."

Capt Markham was a fine horseman, and in 1913 he won the East Yorkshires Regimental point to point race, on his horse, Loretto.

Extract from Wisbech Standard 1916:

AWARDS FOR BRAVERY.
MILITARY MEDAL FOR WALSOKEN
SOLDIER.
Comrade's Stirring Account of His
Bravery.

A stirring account of how a Walsoken soldier gained the Military Medal was given to our representative by a comrade, Pte. L. Fennilow, of Leverington, who is home on ten days' leave from the front. The brave soldier is Corpl. Robert Ernest Rawling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rawling, of Ramnoth-road, Walsoken, whose three sons are all in the Army. Fred is in the Life Guards, Tom is in the Cambridgeshire Territorials, but attached to the Norfolks in France, while the one mentioned above is in the Machine Gun Corps. Mrs. Rawling had received a letter from her son to say he had won the Military Medal. Pte. Fennilow stated that he was in the same trench as Corporal Rawling in the big attack on Saturday, Oct. 14th, when the Cambridge Territorials made their name at the Schwaken Redoubt, their machine gun corps moving up with them. On the Sunday morning, he continued, "All our guns had been put out of action by the Germans with the exception of Corpl. Rawings'. The Germans attacked, but the Corporal with his gun succeeded in repulsing them on his own, and succeeded in driving them back. All our officers had been wounded, but one of the Cambridgeshire officers took us in charge, and lie recommended Rawlings for his gallantry. A day or two afterwards we were relieved, and Corpl. Rawlings went away, returning wearing the Military Medal. We were all proud of his success." It is a singular coincidence that Corpl. Rawling and Pte. Fennilow enlisted together on Sept. 4th, 1914, in the Cambs. Territorials, and went out to France together 21 months ago with the Machine Gun Section of the Cambs. Territorials, but were afterwards transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. They were the only two men from Wisbech district in their company. Before enlisting Corpl. Rawling vas a goods clerk in the employ of the Great Eastern Railway Company.
