Following the Battle of Jutland on 31st March 1916, the Cruiser HMS Hampshire took on board Lord Kitchener and his staff and left Scapa Flow for a visit to North Russia. Shortly after sailing, in a position about 1 mile from Marwick Head in Orkney, HMS Hampshire struck a German mine and sank almost immediately. Of the 662 people on board at the time, only 12 survivors were found. The bodies of approximately 100 officers and men were recovered from the sea and interred in one common grave at Lyness. The body of Lord Kitchener was never found

HMS Cressy, an old 1st Class armoured cruiser, was part of Cruiser Force C, in the area of the North Sea known as the Broad Fourteens (HMS Eurylus, HMS Aboukir and HMS Hogue were the other three cruisers). HMS Eurylus had technical problems and returned to port. Early on September 22nd 1914 the German submarine U9 under the command of Commander Otto Weddigen sighted the Cressy, Aboukir and Hogue steaming NNE at 10 knots without zigzagging. Although the patrols were supposed to maintain 12-13 knots and zigzag the old cruisers were unable to maintain that speed and the zigzagging order was widely ignored as there had been no submarines sighted in the area during the war. HMS Aboukir was hit by a torpedo first and rolled over within half an hour of the attack. HMS Hogue was picking up survivors when she was hit by two torpedoes, sinking within 10 minutes. HMS Cressy had stopped to pick up survivors, but got underway, before she was hit by a torpedo and damaged. Shortly afterwards, a second torpedo hit her and she sank within 15 minutes. 837 men were rescued but 1459 men were killed in total

On 18th August 1919, Rear Admiral Claude Dobson led eight fast Coastal Motor Boats on a daring raid (which became known as the Scooter Raid) into Kronstadt Harbour, where they sank two Bolshevik battleships and a submarine depot ship. Four of the Motor Boats. including 79A. were hit during the raid with the loss in total of four officers and four ratings. Two Victoria Crosses (including one for Dobson) were awarded for this raid

Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Avenger was an Escort Carrier. After taking part in the Operation Torch landings of North Africa in November 1942, she departed Gibraltar with convoy MFK 1(Y) on 14 November, heading home to the Clyde in the UK. At 0305 on 15 November, approximately 45 nautical miles South of Cap Santa Maria, Portugal, Avenger was torpedoed by the German U-Boat U-155, along with two other escorting merchant ships. Avenger was hit on the port side amidships, which in turn ignited her bomb room, blowing out the centre section of the ship. Her bow and stern sections rose in the air and sunk within 2 minutes, leaving only 12 survivors

Storekeeper, Naval Auxilary Personnel (Merchant Navy). HMS Jervis Bay. Died 05/11/1940. Commemorated on the Liverpool Naval Memorial. Jervis Bay was built in 1922 to carry emigrants to Australia. In 1939 she was seconded to the Admiralty and converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser to escort convoys in the North Atlantic. In 1940 Jervis Bay was the sole escort for convoy HX84. consisting of 38 merchant ships. The convoy was attacked by the German pocket battleship Admiral Sheer and Captain Fogarty of the Jervis Bay immediately engaged the Admiral Sheer to enable the convoy to escape. Hopelessly outgunned by the battleship, the outcome was inevitable. 180 of the Jervis Bay died, although a further 65 were rescued. Jervis Bay’s captain received a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions which allowed 32 of the 38 ships in the convoy to escape and reach port safely
