Lieutenant, Royal Navy. HMS Somali. Died 24/09/1942. Age 30. Son of George Leslie and Margaret Atkinson. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. On 20th September 1942, while escorting convoy PQ-18 near Iceland, HMS Somali was hit by a torpedo fired by U-703. Extensive damage was caused and most of her crew were taken off, although 80 remained. HMS Ashanti took HMS Somali in tow. By the evening of the 23/24 September, HMS Ashanti had, considering the damage to HMS Somali, achieved a remarkable towing distance of 420 miles, but in the middle of a snow storm, the tow-rope broke, HMS Somali split into two and sank almost immediately, with the loss of the remaining crew on board |
