WINSLOW WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Gill Cannell & Andrew Dishman 2009
research Martin Edwards
The
Winslow war memorial is to be found in the churchyard of St Lawrence's
Church, High Street, Winslow and takes the form of a Gothic cross on
an octagonal column and plinth resting on a three-stepped base. There
are 50 names for World War 1, 13 for World War 2, 1 for the Malayan
Emergency and 1 for the Falklands. The memorial was dedicated by the
Lord Bishop of Buckingham and unveiled 7 November 1920. Monies were
raised by public subscription. Details appeared in the North Buckinghamshire
Times 9 November 1920 and the Buckingham Advertiser 13 November 1920.
It would appear that the original names were on three panels but it
would appear that with the addition of the World War 2 names one bronze
panel was created with all the World War 1 and World War 2 names on.
The post World War 2 names were added on a separate panel. The names
with forenames were published in local Buckinghmahsire newspapers as
complete sets in various years including 1925.
