The
Furness Railway Company war memorial is to be found in the booking hall
in Barrow Central Railway Station, Holker Street, Barrow-in-Furness
having been previously sited in Old Barrow Central Station (Furness
was in Lancashire in World War 1 but now in Cumbria). It takes the form
of a Stylised Nowy Headed Bronze Plaque set into a sandstone wall with
the Company crest above the inscription and a bronze tablet with a marble
base; one bronze plate was damaged by shrapnel in World War 2 to which
a small brass plaque below explains about the World War 2 damage. The
memorial was manufactured by Birmingham Guild and the masons were Furness
Railway Stonemasons. The memorial was unveiled by the Duke of Devonshire
and deicated by local clergymen and dignitaries 16 October 1921. There
are 68 names listed by surname, initial. rank, and regiment.
