FURNESS RAILWAY COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL

The Furness Railway Company war memorial is to be found in the booking hall in Barrow Central Railway Station, Holker Street, Barrow-in-Furness having been previously sited in Old Barrow Central Station (Furness was in Lancashire in World War 1 but now in Cumbria). It takes the form of a Stylised Nowy Headed Bronze Plaque set into a sandstone wall with the Company crest above the inscription and a bronze tablet with a marble base; one bronze plate was damaged by shrapnel in World War 2 to which a small brass plaque below explains about the World War 2 damage. The memorial was manufactured by Birmingham Guild and the masons were Furness Railway Stonemasons. The memorial was unveiled by the Duke of Devonshire and deicated by local clergymen and dignitaries 16 October 1921. There are 68 names listed by surname, initial. rank, and regiment.

In the 1871 census he was aged 2, born Derbyshire, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Smeeton, resident Nelson Street, Peace Cottages, Litchurch, Derby, Derbyshire. He was admitted to Derby British School, Orchard Street School (Later Lancaster Secondary Modern) Mixed, Derby on 12 October 1880, resident 18 Back Parker Street, Derby, son of Thomas, his father was a Stonemason. In the 1881 census he was aged 12, a scholar, born Derby, Derbyshire, son of Thomas and Elizabeth, resident 16, Little Watson Street, St Alkmund, Derby, Derbyshire. In the 1891 census he was unmarried, aged 21, born Derby, a Qualified Signalman Royal Navy, under treatment in Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth, East Stonehouse, Devon. Confusingly in the 1911 census he was aged 41, born Derby, a Coastgaurdman, married to Sarah Ann, resident 112 Sultan Road Landport Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Hampshire. Even more confusing he married Louisa Euston, at St James, Milton, 14 November 1898 while servinfgabord H.M.S. Victory. Buried in PORTLAND ROYAL NAVAL CEMETERY, Dorset. Grave 575.
