LAKELAND WAR MEMORIAL
IMPOSING CEREMONY AT WINDERMERE
LORD LONSDALE ON MAINTENANCE OF PEACE.
The ceremony of unveiling the war memorial to the men of the combined
parishes of St. Martin’s. St. Mary’s, and St. John’s,
who lost their lives in the war, took place at Windermere yesterday.
The weather was fine and the ceremony was of a most impressive character.
The proceedings commenced with a parade of ex-soldiers, Territorials,
fire brigade, and St. John Ambulance, from the Windermere Fountain,
and parades of the Girl Guides and Sea Scouts from their respective
headquarters. Major E. H. Pattinson was in charge of the parade from
the Fountain, and he was accompanied by his brothers, Capt. G. N.
Pattinson and Flight-Commander Cooper Pattinson. Lieut. Barker, with
Sergt. Jos. Smith marshalling the parade, and Sergt. Cottam with the
Territorials. There would be about 200 ex-Service men.
The route was through Windermere by Ellerthwaite-road to Bowness round
the old Windermere Parish Church and back to the scene of the unveiling.
Here the Windermere Rangers (under Capt. Tomlinson) and the Windermere
Girl Guides (under Capt. Brownlow), together with the Windermere Sea
Scouts, were martialled in order. The procession from St. John’s
room of the officials taking part in the unveiling ceremony proceeded
to the place where ex-Service men and other units, relatives of the
fallen and the general public—mustering many thousands—had
secured orderly standing room.
In the civic procession were the following trustees for the memorial:
Mr. R. B. Marriott (hon. treasurer), Messrs. W. Aspinall, I. W. Bowerman,
G. H. Buckley, W. G. Burrill, F. Croft, J. Fleming, H. Groves, L Hall,
Dr. Holroyd, M.C. and French Legion of Honour, and Mr. Lamb.
Then came the Bishop of Carlisle, the Earl of Lonsdale, Lady Valda
Machell, Colonel and Mrs. Weston, Mr. W. G. Groves, Revs. E. J. Nurse,
A. C. de Boinville, and Canon Mayall, Father Tuchey, Dr. Hough, Rev.
and Mrs. Miles Moss, Mr. Dolman, Mr. Swallow, Mrs. Atkinson, Troutbeck
Bridge, and the Windermere Urban Council with Mr. R. H. Barker, chairman.
The monument is based on the character of the English Rennaissance
architecture, and is classical in form. It is of native Westmorland
green stone, and consists central pedestal with wing walls, on either
side of which are cut out the names of the fallen, and there is also
the following inscription: “Windermere, 1914- 1918. In undying
remembrance of the men who fell in the Great War.” Upon the
central pedestal arises a feature of obelisk form with moulded cap.
On the face and near the top is a carved laurel wreath, and below
this an inverted sword. The site is midway between Windermere and
Bowness at the foot of Upper Craig Walk.
Lord Lonsdale, who was in his uniform as Lord Lieutenant of the County,
said it was not from his point of view so sad a moment as some might
think, for he was perfectly certain they need not worry over the spirits
of those who had departed and to whose memory that memorial had been
erected. It was not for them they had to grieve, but for those they
left behind and who all those they so dearly loved. It was for them
on an occasion like this that he himself offered his deep gratitude
and deep sympathy.
Proceeding, Lord Lonsdale said there were 997 who had enlisted from
Windermere district. He sincerely hoped that the example of those
who joined at the beginning war with such ready response to fight
for king and country and who went and lost their lives would live
in their cherished memories. He sincerely hoped also they would always
do everything in their power to maintain peace. It was to the women
of this country they must look when it threatened.
The Bishop Carlisle then dedicated the memorial, and said, as a result
of the war, they had learnt that justice, liberty, and righteousness
did not come of themselves, and were not the inevitable result of
progress which went on independently of men’s wills an (sic)
actions, and they had learnt that if they wanted peace they must have
peace in their hearts, and do all that they could to promote peace
in Europe. That could only come when all the men and women of our
great nation were determined to act justly by their neighbours and
were determined to live together in that great spirit of brotherhood
which was deep down in the hearts of those men who gave their lives
for their country in the war.

CAPTAIN
MAURICE TWEEDALE, 7th BATTN. (TERRIT.) THE KING'S LIVERPOOL REGIMENT,
was the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Tweedale, of The Oaks,
Windermere, and Church Lane, Oldham. He was born at Oldham on
the 27th January, 1887, and was educated first at Cordwalles,
Maidenhead, and afterwards Lausanne.
Captain
Tweedale had served for some years in the Territorial Force, having
become Lieutenant in his Regiment in January 1912, and Capatin
in August, 1914. His whole Battalion undertook Imperial Service
obligations on the outbreak of war. Captain Tweedale was killed
in action at Festubert on the 15th May, 1915, in a night attack
in an enemy position, which the 7th Liverpools captured after
two prior attacks had failed, a success which unfortunately cost
the Battalion thirteen out of its twenty officers and robbed it
of about a third of its original strength.
The
following account of Captain Tweedale's death was sent by his
servant, Private E. Bracewell: "The charge had been made
about 11.30 p.m. on the 15th May when Captain Tweedale was in
the front line of trenches. At the break of dawn he went over
the top of the trench with his company, when he got wounded in
the shoulder with a bullet. He went on for a few yards, shouting
' Come on, boys ! '—then he was hit again, and dropped to
the ground. . . . Captain Tweedale died like a hero of this War,
and the Battalion miss him terribly, none more so than myself."
Captain
Tweedale, a few days before leaving for the front, married Margaret
(Margot) Bernoulli, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Barlow,
of Long Yort, Freshfield, Lancashire.

“DOUBLE
LIFE” OF C.Q.M.S.
DEAD ON LINE
“Really a Rotter” Note
“THERE is no doubt he had been leading a double life,”
said the Mid-Cheshire Coroner. Mr. R. A. Daniel, at the Sale
inquest, to-day, on Company Quartermaster Sergeant Harold George
Aughpin (47), whose decapitated body was found on the railway
near Dane Road Station, Sale.
Mrs.
Nellie Mabel Aughpin, of Caxton House, Church-street, Windermere,
said she last saw her husband on April 7 when he arrived home
unexpectedly. She told him the police had been inquiring about
him and he left saying he would fetch his case, but did not
return.
“Compassionate” Leave
In
answer to the coroner, Mrs. Aughpin said he did not disclose
that he had any trouble with another woman.
Lieutenant
Thomas Henry Mason, adjutant of a training school, said Aughpin
was granted compassionate leave.
Aughpin
had an offence of irregular conduct concerned with canteen stock
against him when he returned. During the last few weeks he had
been slacking in his duties.
Mrs.
Elizabeth Robinson, of Fairlawn-street, Moss Side, Manchester,
said she had known Aughpin about 6 months and she and her husband
had had “a few words.” She left home about 10 weeks
ago.
Alleged
Threats
Aughpin
several times threatened to do something to himself if she went
back to her husband.
The
coroner said in the letter Aughpin asked Mrs. Robinson to forget
him as he was “really a rotter” and wished her every
happiness with her husband, who, he wrote, had acted very decently
towards him.
The coroner recorded verdict of suicide with insufficient evidence
to show the state of his mind.

Brand |
Lieutenant,
H.M.S. Firefly (a minesweeping trawler), Royal Naval Volunteer
Reserve. On 3 February 1940, Lt D B Johnstone and his crew endeavoured
to defuse a loose British horned mine in the Firth of Forth. Most
men were standing on the rail on one side of the ship watching
those in the ship's boat trying to corral the mine and bring it
alongside. As they did this, a British destroyer went by at high
speed and its bow wave caused one of the oars on the boat to touch
a detonator spike on the mine. The resulting explosion destroyed
the boat and injured or killed most of those watching. Aged 37.

MARRIAGE
OF MISS N. I. HALL, LAZONBY.
In the presence of a large number of friends a marriage of much
local interest took place at Lazonby Church yesterday afternoon,
when Mr. David Brand Johnstone, younger son of Dr. and Mrs.
Johnstone, Brighouse, Yorkshire, was united to Miss Norah I.
Hall, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Hindson Hall, Eden Bank,
Lazonby. The bride is a member of a well known and highly respected
local family, who have done much valuable and public work.
The bride, who was given away by her father, was becomingly
attired in a picture gown of parchment satin with a bridal veil
of old lace, lent by her sister-in-law in Malaya. It was surmounted
by a fillet of orange blossoms. Her bouquet was of white roses,
carnations and lilies of the valley, and she wore a string of
pearls. Her two bridesmaids were Miss Eileen Porritt, Rochdale
(her cousin), and Miss Bessy Thornton, Huddersfield (cousin
of the bridegroom), who wore gowns of blue georgette, with hats
to match, and they carried bouquets of roses. Mr. Allan Johnstone,
F.R.C.S., Leicester, was best man.
The service, which was choral, was performed by the Rector,
the Rev. R. H. Law, and the choir and congregation sang the
hymns "Lead us, Heavenly father," and "Gracious
God and Saviour." The organist, Mr. Salkeld, played appropriate
music, including Mendelssohn's Wedding March as the happy couple
left the church.
A reception was held at Eden Bank, where a large number of guests
were entertained. Later in the day Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone left
for Germany for the honeymoon, the bride travelling in a flowered
pink gown, with grey coat, trimmed with grey lamb, and grey
shoes. There was a large range of handsome presents.
