The Lewes War Memorial can be found at School Hill, Lewes High Street. It encompasses men from many parishes (some of the churches are below). There are 251 names for World War 1 and 127 for World War 2. The various locations that are incorporated on this memorial are also listed separately here, they are SJ - St. Johns Sub Castro, SA - St Annes Westout, TB - St Thomas A'Becket, SM - St. Michaels Southover, St. John the Baptist (Well covered by Alison M.Bentons excellent Book - ISBN 9532833 0 5), PO - Lewes Post Office. The memorial was made by Vernon March, dedicated by the Bishop Suffragan of Lewe and unveiled by General Sir Henry Crichton Clater, GCB, CBE, 6th Setember 1922. The memorial takes the form of a winged 'victory' on an orb with outstretched arms holding a wreath surmounting a tall column, below which are the figures of 'peace' on one side and 'liberty' holding a torch. The World War 1 names are on four oval panels flanking the figures. The World War 2 inscription and name panels were added to south and north face which have now been included here.

FLOYD

John Freemantle

Private 7055, 1st Volunteer Company. 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, South African Field Force. Died of from enetric fever at New St. Andrew's Hospital, Bloemfontein, South Africa, 18 February 1901.

Extract from Sussex Express - Saturday 23 February 1901, page 5:

LEWES.

DEATH OF PRIVATE FLOYD AT BLOEMFONTElN.—Much regret wae expressed in Lewes yesterday morning when the London papers announced the death from enteric fever, at Bloemfontein, on February 18th, of No. 7,055, Private J. Floyd, of the Volunteer Company of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Private Floyd was an active member of the local company of the 1stt Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers, and, after the War Office's requisition for volunteers, was one of the first to offer his services. He was a marksman and an excellent soldier, and saw considerable service in the field, taking part in several engagements, including the fierce fights at Zand River and Diamond Hill, where the representatives of Sussex greatly distinguished themselves. Additional sadness is added to the melancholy event by the fact that the volunteers were at Bloemfontein in readiness to come back to the old country. The announcement of Private Floyd's death was issued by the War Offioe Thursday evening, and much sympathy is extended towards the parents, who reside in Western-road, in their bereavement.

Extract from Hastings and Bexhill Independent - Thursday 26 September 1901, page 2:

MEMORIAL TOO A LEWES VOLUNTEER.

A brass tablet which has been placed in St. Michael’s Church, Lewes, by the members of “D” Company, 1st Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers, in memory of Prvt. J, F. Floyd, who died at Bloemfontein while on active service, was unveiled on Sunday morning. The ceremony was performed by the Mayor (Councillor Holman), who attended in state, and was accompanied by several members of the Council, including Aldermen Gates, Buckman and Flint, Councillors Blackett, Riekie, Beard, Shilson, Stevens, Holman Bishop, Patrick, Whittington, Hammond, Pelling and Uridge, the Town Clerk (Mr. M. S. Blaker), the Medical Officer of Health (Mr. J. R. Steinhaeuser), the Borough Surveyor (Mr. D. Roberts), the Rate Collector (Mr. T. Buckman) and the School Attendance Officer (Mr. W. Waghorn). The Lewes Rifle Volunteers held a special church parade in connection with the ceremony and were joined by the Uckfield Company. Capt. A. F. A. Howe was in command and there were also present Capt. Stott, Sergt.-Inst. Walton, Sergt.-Inst. Musselwhite, Col.-Sergt. Philcox, Col.- Sergt. Georges, Sergt. Kirk, Sergt. Welling, Sergt. Langridge, Sergt. Rice and Sergt. Beck. There was a crowded congregation at St. Michael’'s, among those noticed in the church being Privates Williams, Avis and Webb (who served with Private Floyd in South Africa), Private Taunner, of the C.I.V,, Private Reed, of the Imperial Light Infantry, and Trooper Card, of Brabant's Horse.

The service was conducted by Rev. H. Oswell (curate) and one of the lessons was read bg Rev. T. Outram Marshall. The pulpit was occupied by the Rector (Rev. Dr. Belcher), who preached an eloquent and stirring sermon from the words, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended : but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians iii. 13th and 14th verses). In the course of his remarks the rev. gentleman said the apostle could not have meant them to forget all things, but only those which were in the nature of a burden or an obstacle. He could not forget—the men and women of Lewes could not possibly forget—the events at the beginning of last year. They could not possibly forget the dark and drear days when it seemed as if the splendid honour of the army was to be lowered and blemished by absolute failure, and they could not forget that when the country called for volunteers there came hundreds and thousands to stand in the forefront and meet the enemy in the gate. They did not want to forget those things—those inspiriting things that helped them with regard to the future. Neither did they want to forget the hundreds and thousands left behind, men who had been cut down by the bullet, by the sword and by disease. Continuing, the preacher criticised a placard posted about the town and which he said invited people to a peaceable spirit. The placard had been issued by people for whom he had great respect, but the compilers had fallen into one or two mistakes. They seemed to mistake what was known by peace—they seemed to forget that there was a time when for 21o years there was in the history of the world a peace of that kind. During that time from one end of the then known world to the other the tramp of the military foot was never heard except on policeman’s duty and the clash of steel was never heard and one of the results was that an empire fell to pieces like a piece of rotten cheese. He (the preacher) called attention to another peace, the peace St. Paul aimed at and which he hoped they all aimed at—the peace that passeth all understanding. In conclusion, the preacher made a touching reference to the late Private Floyd and said he prayed God that he had entered into the peace about which he had been speaking.

At the conclusion of the sermon the hymn, “Through the right of doubt and sorrow,” was sung as a recessional and during its progress the Mayor and Corporation and the choir took up a position in front of the tablet, which was hidden from view by a Union Jack. The choir then chanted the 46th Psalm, at the conclusion of which the Mayor unveiled the tablet, on which is the following inscription :

In Memory of Private J. F. FLOYD,
1st Volunteer Company 1st Battalion Royal Sussex Regt.,
Who died at Bloemfontein, South Africa<
February 18th, 1901.

ERECTED BY HIS COMRADES

Directly the tablet had been unveiled the two buglers (Lc.-Corpl. Barnard and Bugler Dennis) sounded “The Last Post” and the organist (Mr. Pym Browning) then played the National Anthem. On leaving the church the volunteers marched to head quarters, where they were dismissed.
