Flying Officer J. Smith' (flying BR233 T-Q) and Sergeant J.C. Gilbert"' (flying BR227 T-T) made passing attacks at the bombers, but were themselves attacked by the Bf 109s. Smith's Spitfire caught fire following the first pass, before being hit by two further Bf 109s, exploding before he had a chance to bail out. Gilbert's Spitfire then received the same treatment. It rolled over onto its back and dived into the sea off Wied-iz-Zurrieq. No parachute was seen.

Acting Wing-Commander Hubert Mortimer Styles, No. 407 Souadron, who was born at Bristol in 1914, and whose home is at Keanny, North Devon, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order. "This officer," says the official announcement "has displayed rare powers of leadership and organising ability.

"As commander of the squadron he has played a large part in raising it to its present high standard of operational efficiency. The squadron has been responsible for destroying or severely damaging many thousands or tons of enemy shipping. "This officer has set a magnificent example of courageous leadership and determination."

Acting Wing-Commander Styles was educated at Clifton and was commissioned from Cranwell after winning the Sword of Honour in 1934.

Born 1894. Birth registered in the April to June Quarter 1894 in Brighton Registration District, Sussex. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). In the 1911 census he was aged 16, born Brighton, Sussex, a school boarder, resident Denstone College, Denstone, Staffordshire. Panel 2, Column 1.

Lieut. (Act. Capt.) Stewart O'Rorke Surridge, was awarded the Cross under the following circumstances: "Though wounded in the thigh, he continued to lead his company, and finally gained his objective, capturing a large number of prisoners; he remained in command of his company throughout three days of heavy fighting. When attacking a village he steadied his men under heavy shelling, and then led them forward into the village under heavy fire until he was severely wounded."
