Ordinary Seaman J/36205, H.M.S. Raglan, Royal Navy. Killed when his ship was sunk during the Battle of Imbros 20 January 1918. Aged 19. Born 30 April 1898 in Waterfoot, Lancashire. Enlisted 30 April 1915 for 12 years, height 5 feet 1½ inches, chest 31½ inches, black hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion.Engine Cleaner, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Son of Louisa Mears (formerly Mannion), of 1, Crown Street, Shawforth, Rochdale, and the late Patrick Mannion, formerly resident 6, Lodge Side, Shawforth, near Rochdale, Lancashire. In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born Waterfoot, Lancashire, a child, grandson of Patrick and Winifred Mannion, resident 15, Buckley Street, Heywood, Bury, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 12, born Waterfoot, Lancashire, at school, son of Patrick and Louisa Mannion, resident 168, Market Street, Shawforth, Whitworth, Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 27.

Engineer Lieutenant, H.M.S. Duke of Albany, Royal Naval Reserve. Killed when his ship was torpedoed and sunk about 9:10 AM by Imperial German Navy submarine SM UB-27 in the North Sea approximately 20 miles east of the Pentland Skerries 24 August 1916. Aged 45. Second Engineer, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Son of George and Matilda Victoria Maskell, of Fleetwood; husband of Rachel Agnes (nee Gornall) Maskell, of 122, Victoria Street, Fleetwood, Lancs, married October to December Quarter 1899 in Fylde egistration District, Lancashire. In the 1901 census he was aged 29, born Brightlingsea, Essex, a Marine engineer, married to Rachel A Maskell , resident 64, Harris Street, Fleetwood, Fylde, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 39, born Brightlingsea, Essex, a Marine engineer, married to Rachel A Maskell with one daughter, resident 64, Harris Street, Fleetwood, Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 18.

MASKELL Albert George Glover of 64 Harris-street Fleetwood Lancashire engineer sub-lieutenant (R.N.R.) died 24 August 1916 at sea (killed in action) Probate Lancaster 18 October to Rachel Agnes Maskell widow. Effects £795 13s. 1d.

Son of George and Margaret Jane Mayson, of Whitehaven, Cumberland; husband of Bessie Rebecca Harris (formerly Mayson, nee Birkett), of 98, Kemp Street, Fleetwood, married July to September Quarter 1912 in Fylde Registration Office, Lancashire. In the 1901 census he was aged 10, born Whitehaven, Cumberland, son of Margaret J Mayson, resident 29, Albert Street, Fleetwood, Fylde, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 20, born Whitehaven, a Fisherman, boarding at 1, Delhi Street, St. Thomas, Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales. Buried in FLEETWOOD BOROUGH CEMETERY, Lancashire. Grave 357.

Mentioned in Despatches (MiD). Son of Mr. A. A. and Mrs L. S. Mitchell, of Woodfield, Stevenage, Herts. Educated Jesus College, Cambridge. No known grave. Commemorated on BASRA MEMORIAL, Iraq. Panel 16 and 62. See also Charterhouse School

Extract from Western Mail, 25 June 1917, page 2:

BRECON LIEUTENANT KILLED.

Lieutenant Alexander Charles Oswald Mitchell, who was killed in Mesopotamia on April 30, was the elder son of Mr. A. A. Mitchell, J.P., and Mrs. A. A. Mitchell, Glyn Celyn, Brecon. He was educated at Charterhouse and Jesus College, Cambridge. He then entered the general manager's office of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In September, 1911, he was given a commission by Colonel Lord Glanusk in a Brecknockshire Territorial Battalion, and went with them to Aden and India. He volunteered for war service, and was attached to a battalion of the South Wales Borderers, and had been with them for six months when he was killed.

In ever loving memory of Lieut. Alexander Charles Oswald Mitchell, Brecknockshire Territorial Bats. (attached South Wales Borderers). eldest sou of Mr and Mrs A. A. Mitchell, Glyncelyn, Brecon, South Wales, killed in action April 30th, 1917, in the Battle of Bund-I-Adhaim, Mesopotamia ; aged 29.
