West Kirby Officer Killed.

LIEUT. M. E. MOSS FALLEN.

It is with regret that we announce the fact that Second-Lieut. Maurice Edgar Moss, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Moss, of Brookfield Gardens, has been officially reported as killed in action. It is stated that he was killed whilst carrying one of his wounded men to a place of safety. At the time of his death he was 21 years of age.
Lieut. Moss joined the King's Liverpool Rifles in 1912, was mobilised on August 4th, 1914, and sent to France in February, 1915, where he saw active service on the Somme and at Ypres. The King's commission was granted him in January of this year.
He received his education at the Calday Grange Grammar School, and was the last of three close school friends to fall in the service of their country. A genuine sentiment of sorrow at his loss, and sympathy with his parents, is keenly felt in the district.

Extract from The Birkenhead News, Saturday 16 December 1916, page 6:

His Life for His Friend.

HOW WEST KIRBY OFFICER DIED.

Since the announcement of the death of Second-Lieut. Maurice Edgar Moss, of the King's Liverpool Regiment, in last week's issue, the following details have been received—"Lieut. Moss, after having successfully led a raid on the enemy trenches, returned to his own lines in perfect safety. News came that one of his company was lying in the open, seriously wounded. Without hesitating, Lieut. Moss went out, reached his man, and was bringing him in on his back, when he was fatally shot, his death being almost instantaneous. He was buried in a little cemetery, well behind the lines."
