CALVERT George William
Private 11288, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Died 24 October 1914. Aged 31. Son of the late Arthur and Lucia Calvert of Shiphay Stow, Wisbech; husband of Ethel Calvert of 8 Long Road, Crosby, Scunthorpe. Buried in YPRES TOWN CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Row A3. CAMPSALL Wilfred [Lawson]
Private 1929, 1st/5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment formerly 1773, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 5 June 1915. Aged 20. Born at Medge Hall (aka Midge Hall) in 3 June 1895, enlisted Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. Eldest of the seven children of George and Emma Campsall (nee Singleton). His father was from Crowle and his mother from Gringley-on-the-Hill. Enlisted as a territorial soldier in the Lincolnshire Regiment at Scunthorpe, possibly before outbreak of war and most likely with 'G' Company, 5th Battalion, who were the nominal territorial battalion for the north of the county. Transferred to the 1st/5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, and with them in Gallipoli in June 1915. The 1st/5th Manchester’s had gone out to Egypt in September 1914, moving to Gallipoli on 6 May when they landed with 42nd Division at Helles Beach. On 26 May they became part of 127th Brigade in 42nd Division. On 4 June, the 42nd Division, alongside the 29th Division, attacked the Turkish trenches in the hills above Cape Helles in an attempt to breakout from Helles Beach. Now known as the Third Battle of Kritha, the 127th Brigade lead the attack for 42nd Division. The attack was succesfull, by Gallipoli standards, but at the cost of a huge number of casualties. Consolidating their position over the next two days the 1st/5th Manchester’s defended it against several Turkish counter-attacks. He was one of the casualties of these counter-attacks. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 159 to 171.

Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Cliff, of Scawby Grove, Brigg, Lincs; husband of Helen Morrison Cliff, of Langham Hotel, Portland Place, London. Awarded the Légion d’honneur (France). Extract from The Times, 14 February 1918:

MAJOR GROSVENOR TALBOT CLIFF, Dragoon Guards, second son of the late Joseph Cliff, of Scawby-grove, Lincolnshire, died on February 10 at the front as the result of an accident. He obtained his commission in the Dragoon Guards in 1899, and served with his regiment through the South African War, obtaining the Queen’s medal with five clasps. He served as adjutant to the Lincolnshire Yeomanry from 1912 until after the outbreak of war, when he rejoined his regiment at the front, where he had been serving since June, 1916. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in the spring of 1917. He leaves a widow, and three sons.
