[Stoker on memorial]. Fireman, S.S. Unity (Goole), Mercantile Marine. Died when his ship was en route from Newhaven for Calais when torpedoed by German submarine UB-5 2 May 1918. Aged 24. Goods Porter, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Born Goole. Son of the late George Henry and Jane Elizabeth Bateman; husband of Sophia Bateman (nee Burden), of 85, South Street, Goole, Yorks, married 10 October 1914 in Goole. Baptised 30 August 1893 in Goole, son of George Henry and Jane Elizabeth Bateman resident Doyle Street, Goole. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born Goole, Yorkshire, a Goods Porter, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, residinjg with his aunt, Mary Elizabeth Goodall, at Back Raven Street, Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding). No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London.

Born 25 July 1888 in Morley, Yotrkshire. Enlisted 7 November 1906 for 5 years and 7 years reseve, formerly Labourer in Coalpit. Height 5 feet 5 inches, chest 35½ inches, brown hair, brown hair, fresh complexion. Transferred to Reserve at Portsmouth 4 December 1911. Recalled for service 13 July 1914. Husband of Winnie Bedford, of 35 Tavern Street, off John Street, Wakefield, Yorks. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 1. Fireman, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Husband of Jane (nee Eaves) Birnie, of 2, Pharos Grove, Fleetwood, married in the October to December Quarter 1908 in Fylde Registration District, Lancashire. . In the 1911 census he was aged 33, born Dublin, a Coal Porter, married to Jane with one son, resident 2, Pharos Grove, Fleetwood, Lancashire.
